Recipe of the Month

Garlic Chicken

Ingredients

  • 2 Lemons
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 2 Half chickens

Position an oven rack about 8 to 10 inches from the broiler and preheat.  Grate the lemon zest and conbine in a small bowl with the butter, garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste.  Mash with a fork to make a smooth paste. 

With your fingers, gently loosen the skin on the chicken breast, legs, and thighs.  Spread the flavored butter under skin as evenly as possible.  Halve the lemons and squeeze 2 halves over the chicken; season with salt and pepper.

National Awareness Month

September - National Healthy Aging Month

 


   September is Healthy Aging Month is an annual health observance month designed to focus national attention on the  positive aspects of growing older.  The month, crated by Educational Television Network over 15 years ago, is part of the Healthy Aging, a national, ongoing health promation designed to broaden awareness of the positive spects of agin and to provide inspiration for adults, ages 50-plus, to improve their phisical, metal, social and financial health.

In an effort to draw attention to the needs of the growing numbers of older adults, the month was developed to offer a second month on the calendar is addition to May is Older Americans Month.  September was chosen as a time when many people think about getting started on new tasks after the summer.  Drawing on the "back to school" urge embedded in everyone from childhood, the observance month activities are designed to encourage people rejuvenate and get going on positive health measures.  These measures inclode physical, social, financial and metal wellness.

Great Midwest Balloon Fest

 

The first annual Overland Park Great Midwest Balloon Fest will launch September 17-19, 2010. Come to this family-friendly FREE event for a thrilling weekend of spectacular hot air balloons, non-stop activities, delicious food, the Kids Korner, and entertainment. You’ll see balloon ascensions and magical balloon glows.

Location: 167th and Antioch

More than 50 hot air balloonists from all over the country will converge on Kansas City to compete for fun and prizes. This family-oriented, fun-filled weekend will include balloon glows and competitions, music and entertainment, food, and activities for kids of all ages. The City of Overland Park and the Overland Park Convention and Visitors Bureau have partnered with us to help make The Great Midwest Balloon Fest the #1 balloon festival in the midwest! his event will benefit the American Stroke Foundation, Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care, and The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City.

With a new name and a new location at THEIS PARK - just east of the Country Club Plaza and North of The Kauffman Center – volunteers are planning a fun-filled morning. Register now! Eldercare: Tips for Dividing Cost Amoung Siblings

When aging parents need financial help, adult children are sometimes able to offer it.  But how do you decide who gives what? That's what a reader asking Carrie Schwab-Pomerants, of Charles Schwab.  Her responce begins with advice on how to figure out how much the parents need.  Then, she says:

 You might start by asking what each of you is willing and able to contribute; if the total is sufficient, great.  But if it isn't, you'll need to discuss a workable way to divide the reposnibility.  Perhaps one of you is able to contribute more financially; perhaps one of you with fewer fiancial resources can contribute in other valueable ways.  Remember that your parents need money, but they almost certainly need time and attention as well.  One of your siblings could help with cooking, or paying bills, or driving, for example.
